about

Ten years ago when Bunchie Johnson died, Diane Ireland commissioned Jimmy Carpenter and I to write a funeral dirge for Bunchie when they interred him into the Barbarin Tomb. She wanted us to have the great New Orleans arranger, Wardell Querzurgue work with us on the song. That was a wow moment. Jimmy and I would write and bring it to Wardell so he could hear it (he was blind at that time of his life). We'd play it for the Maestro and he would give suggestions on what he would do and thought. It was a fun process of writing a song.
The song was played 10 years a go at the grave site then put away. I always wanted to record this song. In 2019, The Nightcrawlers were doing our 5th release, the Grammy winning Atmosphere record. One of the the guys in the band said we should do a dirge and I suddenly remembered about Tomb Tune. It was already written and ready to go.

I wanted to put it on this record because the song was written for the historic Barbarin family tomb.
